SUMMARY:Historical Society at The Martin House Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Martin House Museum is hosting their monthly Historical Society program this Sunday\, November 16th at 2pm!This month’s program is entitled “These Walls Do Talk: A Visual Tour of Our Architectural Heritage”. Presenter will be Herb Shafer who has previously presented on the themes of The Historic American Building Survey and its role in the restoration of historic buildings\, and the Underground Rail Road and its system of stations from Iowa through northern Illinois during the years prior to the American Civil War.In regard to this month’s presentation Shafer describes himself as an amateur architectural historian. His interest in architecture\, its evolving styles and construction methods\, began in childhood with an appetite to understand what he observed in the family’s often repaired and remodeled\, century-old farm house. “I was regularly sent to the cellar to bring up something from the home-canned goods stored there. Usually it was canned vegetables which needed little more than to be opened and served at supper. But other times it was something that was needed immediately\, an ingredient for something wonderful\, perhaps\, like an apple pie. No matter\, I was always more interested in things like how the floors joists were morticed into a structural beam than about being prompt in delivering to the kitchen the requested goods.”In his presentation Shafer will review America’s changing architectural tastes and illustrate with examples of recognizable homes and main street businesses in Fulton. “Old house lovers” will be encouraged to add their own observations during the presentation. The Martin House Museum is located at 707 10th Avenue in Fulton\, Illinois. The building is handicap accessible. The program is free\, and open to the public.
